How Bad is Eating Meat?

Jeff Justice

11 a.m., October 13, 2019

By now, most of us are used to the idea that global warning is caused by human-generated carbon emissions. Many of us drive electric cars and have solar panels to reduce our carbon footprint.

But how about the effects of animal agriculture? After all, the biomass of all cows, goats, pigs, and chickens is much greater than the biomass of humans. Over half of farmland is planted to produce animal feed.

In this talk, Humanist Community member Jeff Justice will discuss this question while avoiding the question of whether it is ethical to eat animals. He is not a vegetarian. He may quickly touch on the health aspects of eating animals.

This talk was inspired by the 90-minute documentary “Cowspiracy”, which is now available on Netflix, Amazon Prime, and YouTube. Jeff Justice invites you to view the video ahead of time.

After the Forum, please join us for a lunch at 12:30pm. The lunch is complimentary for first-time visitors and students.

Because of the topic of the talk today, the buffet lunch will feature some meatless dishes for attendees to sample if they wish.

Sub-Saharan Humanist Entrepreneur Fund

Hank Pellissier

11 a.m., September 22, 2019

The Brighter Brains Institute, a SF Bay nonprofit (https://Humanists.Global) has promoted humanism in Uganda, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Cameroon, and Tanzania for 5 years. It built 4 schools and 2 orphanages, but it eventually decided the best way to provide help is offering $300 startup grants to humanist entrepreneurs – mostly in Nigeria. It has delivered funds for 81 of these small projects, in both rural and small industry enterprises.

Hank Pellissier’s talk will discuss the failures of our other philanthropic methods, the hazards of our present strategy, and our future goals.

Hank Pellissier is founder/program director/CFO of the Brighter Brains Institute. This is his third presentation to Silicon Valley Humanists. He’s very happy to be coming back.

After the Forum, please join us for a lunch at 12:30pm. The lunch is complimentary for first-time visitors and students.

Are Two Heads Better Than One?

Arthur Jackson

11 a.m., September 15, 2019

Arthur Jackson will focus this talk on Chapter 19 of his book “How to Live the Good Life: A Users Guide for Modern Humans”. Chapter 19 is entitled “Organizing for an Enlightened Community Made up of Enlightened Persons.”

His talk will focus on “Wisdom Groups.” These groups would bring together interested people to share their dreams, hopes, joys, and enthusiasms to live in and create a better world. These groups would gather together persons to discuss and learn to live lives that are based on new forms of ethics.

These new ethics would be derived from the wisdom of past times that are validated by the use of the Scientific Method, and not blind obedience to ancient texts and writings. They would also discuss current, and potential future circumstances that might require the revision of society’s, and their own, personal, collective ethical stances.

This presentation will allow plenty of time do discuss how such groups might be implemented in various communities such as the Humanist Community, and in others.

Arthur Jackson is the author of the book “How to Live the Good Life: A Users Guide for Modern Humans” (https://www.iuniverse.com/BookStore/BookDetails/793049-how-to-live-the-good-life). He is also a long-time leader in the Humanist Community in Silicon
Valley, serving as is President for many terms over the last more than 40 years, and otherwise actively involved. He has long thought of how to create communities that cause all members to thrive and achieve the best of what they can be.

After the Forum, please join us for a lunch at 12:30pm. The lunch is complimentary for first-time visitors and students.

Energy & the Environment

Dr. Alexander Cannara

11 a.m., September 8, 2019

Dr. Alexander Cannara will explain why energy from fire must go and what sensible replacements can be. Everyone who has lived in an urban environment has experienced smog-related bad air days. Have you ever wondered why an “intelligent” species like ours has stayed with fossil fuels long after we had the technical knowledge to move on?

The forum will start with a short video and allow time to discuss the video and have your related questions answered. After that, additional facts will be presented and more questions taken.

You can prepare ahead of time if you wish: http://tinyurl.com/y65belox

Dr. Cannara is an Electrical Engineer and educator with expertise in a wide variety of topics related to energy production, computer systems, climate/ocean change and the ‘what’ and ‘why’ of actions we need to take to restore and preserve our environment. He holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University in Mathematical Methods in Educational Research and MS degrees in both EE and Statistics. He is married with three children and resides in Menlo Park, CA. His contact information is 650-400-3071 & cannara@sbcglobal.net
