Dr. Michael Mallary

This talk on Climate Change will discuss the science and politics of how we got here, where we are, and where we are going. Suggestions for how we can mitigate what is very likely to be a climatic disaster in this century and for many centuries beyond will be presented.

Dr. Mallary received his PhD in High Energy Physics from the California Institute of Technology in 1972. He did research in H.E.P. as a professor at Northeastern University until 1978 (20 publications) when he went into industry. Since then, he has been awarded 165 issued patents (and authored 37 publications) while working for almost all of the major disk drive manufacturers. All of your magnetic disk drives utilize some of these inventions.

Craig Dunkerley, Southbay Coordinator of the California Clean Money Campaign (www.yesfairelections.org), will discuss his organization’s recent victories and current efforts to reduce the influence of money in politics.

California Clean Money Campaign is a non-partisan, non-profit organization founded in 2002 that works on various election reforms, with a primary focus on reducing the influence of special interest money in politics.

This presentation is based on the concepts discussed in the book “On Bullshit” by Harry G. Frankfurt, 2005, Princeton University Press – Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Princeton.

We will explore such concepts as:

What is BS?
Why is there so much of it?
What is the Difference between BS and a Lie?
What is a BS Artist?
What do the New Ideas of Modern Psychology have to contribute?

As such, this presentation will focus on some of the major concepts discussed in Frankfurt’s Book. These ideas will be combined with those of modern psychological knowledge and how it operates to enhance, and even contribute to the BS found all around us. These ideas can illustrate how most, if not all, of us contribute to the pool of BS in the World.

Bio:

This presentation will be given by Carl Angotti, a longtime member of the Humanist Community. He is trained and worked as an Electronic Engineering Product Development Consultant in Silicon Valley for many years. He holds an BS from Carnegie-Mellon University and MS from USC in Electrical Engineering, and an MBA in Business from SJSU. He has also been an amateur student of Philosophy, Psychology and Economics since his youth and early adulthood.

He was intrigued by the concept of BS and how it operates in everyday life, in advertising and in politics.

Did the framers of the Second Amendment intend only to protect the right to bear arms within a “well-regulated militia”? Proponents of gun control say yes. But does it even matter what the framers of the Constitution intended? Why can’t we just craft rules that make sense today? Does the Constitution guarantee the right to own guns for self-defense? For defense against a tyrannical government? What kind of arms are covered by the Second Amendment? And who decides? We will try to answer these questions in the latest installment of the Mini Law School.
