{"id":15356,"date":"2025-02-24T05:49:00","date_gmt":"2025-02-24T05:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.humanists.org\/blog\/?p=15356"},"modified":"2025-03-07T02:56:37","modified_gmt":"2025-03-07T02:56:37","slug":"2025-03-02","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.humanists.org\/blog\/2025-03-02\/","title":{"rendered":"Are There Constitutional Constraints Against President Trump&#8217;s Actions?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" src=\"http:\/\/www.humanists.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/humanists.org_2024_08_04_Leland-Chan-pic.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14953\"\/><figcaption>Prof. Leland Chan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p><strong>11 a.m., March 2, 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4\">Join us for a combined meeting of the Bay Area Humanists (BAH) and the Humanist Community in Silicon Valley, either in person or online, as Prof. Leland Chan speaks to us in Mountain View.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4\">The second Trump administration hit the ground running with a flurry of Executive Orders, the scope of which raises questions of legality and constitutionality.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"pl-5 list-disc mb-4\">\n<li>Can the presidency unilaterally eviscerate USAID activities if the programs had been created and funded by Congress?<\/li>\n<li>Doesn&#8217;t that violate the principle of separation of powers?<\/li>\n<li>Can President Trump unilaterally eliminate birthright citizenship?<\/li>\n<li>Can he eliminate all &#8220;DEI&#8221; programs within the federal government?<\/li>\n<li>Can he unilaterally form the Department of Government Efficiency and, if so, what powers could it have?<\/li>\n<li>What about Panama, Greenland, and Canada?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"mb-4\">In this presentation, Prof. Chan will discuss how the U.S. constitution had been crafted in order to prevent the concentration of power (that the Trump administration is now attempting to wield), and how those constraints can fail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4\"><strong>ABOUT LELAND CHAN<\/strong><br>Leland Chan is currently an adjunct professor of law at Golden Gate University. He is a retired General Counsel of the California Bankers Association.
