With the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, anti-abortion forces are on the move. States are adopting legislation calculated to be challenged in court, and the ultimate goal is to invite the High Court to overturn Roe v Wade. In this segment of the Mini-Law School, Attorney Leland Chan will examine how abortion became a constitutional right, the current state of the law on abortion, and how this latest attack might play out.

In February, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Ed Markey released the Green New Deal Resolution, which seeks to address climate change by creating millions of new green jobs that will decarbonize our economy. These broad brush strokes provide the framework. Now we as a society get to have a conversation about what we want the details to be. Join us for a presentation followed by Q&A.

Presenter and facilitator Justine Burt recently wrote a book called The Great Pivot: Creating Meaningful Work to Build a Sustainable Future. She will give an overview of the Green New Deal from the Sunrise Movement, and present highlights of her book.

Michele Mashburn

Disability Justice is about ensuring access to all elements of life and letting those with disabilities determine their own individual needs. It includes elements of difference and allows people to be their whole self while including space for self-care, reflection, and hard discussions.

Michele Mashburn will discuss elements of disability justice, the difference between accommodation and access, and how the attitude of inclusion will benefit all groups. We will also discuss Ableism, models of disability, and how to create a supportive community no matter what happens.

Michele is the Director of San Jose Peace and Justice Center and a cohort member of Creating Freedom Movements.

Sharat G. Lin is a research fellow at the San José Peace and Justice Center. He writes and lectures on global political economy, labor migration, social movements, and the Middle East. He has lived in Saudi Arabia.

Ron Garret

This is another in a series of talks on the history of science and how we came to our present understanding of how our world works. This installment focuses on math and computation.

Ron Garret is a software engineer by trade. He is currently working on easy-to-use-cryptography software. He was a co-founder and CTO of Virgin Charter, and an early hire at Google. He was previously a rocket scientist. He also made a feature-length documentary about homelessness (www.graceofgodmovie.com). His blog can be found at blog.rongarret.info.
